HERTZEL COLUMN: Harris finds new home at Michigan St.

MORGANTOWN — Eron Harris apparently has found a home and it is going to be very interesting to see if it works out any better than his home in West Virginia.

Harris, who announced he was leaving Bob Huggins and the Mountaineers two and a half months ago, has settled on Michigan State, according to a tweet in which he said he was becoming a Spartan and reports by both ESPN and the Indianapolis Star.

Harris was supposed to visit former WVU coach John Beilein at Michigan over the weekend but did not make the visit.

Harris averaged 17.2 points a game at WVU last season but apparently was not at ease with the coaching methods of Huggins.

“We respected (Huggins’) coaching style but it probably wasn’t the best fit,” Harris told The Star on May 7. “Looking for that right fit as far as a coach goes is probably the biggest thing.”

Interesting he should wind up under Tom Izzo at Michigan State, who may be the only coach in America as intense as Huggins and who also stresses defense as strongly as does Huggins.

Huggins’ biggest problem with Harris was his defensive play.

Over the weekend, Huggins completed his recruiting class by adding a small forward with the movie star name of BillyDee Williams from South Plains Community College in Texas. Out of Orlando, Florida and Iowa Western Community College, he averaged 10.4 points a game while shooting 40 percent from 3 at South Plains as the sixth man.

Coincidence?

I think not.

West Virginia pitcher Sean Carley was informed that he had been drafted by the New York Yankees while he was in a barber’s chair, getting his mullet and goatee cleaned up.

They had been his signature items, making him look nearly exactly like the foul-mouthed fictional HBO former pitcher Kenny Powers of the series “Eastbound & Down.”

It’s an image Carley promoted, being a hard-throwing pitcher himself.

Pictures of the two have gone viral on the Internet, a lot of coverage for a 14th-round pick.

Now what was coincidental about Carley being in a barber chair when he learned the Yankees had drafted him?

The Yankees require their players to be neatly groomed without facial hair … you might remember when outfielder Johnny Damon came over from the Red Sox and shaved.

It won’t be hard, though, for Carley. He transferred to WVU from the Air Force Academy, which also had a code.

  • Holgorsen’s program hits turning point

You can almost sense, as you watch West Virginia University football coach Dana Holgorsen sit before the gathered Big 12 media contingent answering questions in the Omni Hotel in Arlington, Texas, that he senses his program has reached a turning point.

In the end, it comes down to the quarterback.
Always has with Dana Holgorsen, always will.
Quarterback is the offense with the West Virginia University coach. When he does well, the team wins – almost always.
When he does poorly, the team doesn’t stand much of a chance.

  • Saban, family happy at Alabama

Alabama football coach Nick Saban, whose team opens the season against West Virginia in Atlanta on Aug. 30, denied receiving or turning down this offseason an offer of $100 million to coach Texas, indicating he planned to finish his career as coach of the Crimson Tide.

  • HERTZEL COLUMN: ‘Quarterback child prodigy’ comes to WVU amidst very high expectations

Has West Virginia football coach Dana Holgorsen finally put the arrow he needs in his quiver with the commitment received Wednesday from high school quarterback David Sills, who is a rather extraordinary story and may also just be a rather extraordinary quarterback?

  • WVU kicker Molinari ‘All-American boy’

West Virginia kicker Mike Molinari may not be an All-American but he is an All-American boy.
He was honored for that on Wednesday when the Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association announced the West Virginia redshirt senior kicker/punter Michael Molinari is a nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

  • HERTZEL COLUMN: Smallwood puts future in jeopardy

The last thing West Virginia’s struggling football program needed as twilight was setting on Bastille Day in Morgantown was to have one of its own whisked off to the North Central Regional Jail on a fugitive warrant from another state, especially a player who had figured to play a key role in the resurrection of a program gone bad.

  • HERTZEL COLUMN: MLB All-Star game biggest celebration of top athletes

You will pardon me if I find something else to do when the Pro Bowl rolls around, or if I try to find a “Three Stooges” marathon when it’s time for the NHL All-Star game. As for the NBA All-Star game, I’d rather watch a replay of a four-year-old Uruguay-Ethiopia World Cup soccer match in which I knew the outcome.
