FAIRMONT — The long-rumored move to the Big 10 Conference is now official for Marion County's three high schools.
East Fairmont, Fairmont Senior and North Marion were approved late Tuesday night by the Big 10 administrators to join the conference starting in the 2011-12 school year.
The move move will give the Big 10 eight Class AAA schools for the 2011-12 school season in Lewis County, Bridgeport, Robert C. Byrd, Elkins, Buckhannon, East Fairmont, Fairmont Senior and North Marion.
The conference also includes Class AA schools Grafton, Liberty, Philip Barbour and Lincoln.
"Fairmont Senior, East Fairmont and North Marion High Schools have been approved for membership in the Big 10 Conference starting in the 2011-12 school year," Marion County facilities and athletics director Frank Moore said. "The Big 10 Conference is strong and well-recognized throughout the state of West Virginia. And the new membership of the Marion County schools will support the Big 10 Conference to continue to strive for excellence."
A more complete story will be in Thursday's Times West Virginian.
