Service longtime priority at S&M Glass

FAIRMONT — For more than 20 years, S&M Glass Inc. has been working hard to take care of its customers.

The late Gene Martin started S&M Glass at 204 Morgantown Ave. in 1984.

He was formerly the manager of Fairmont Glass and Paint, which was stationed where BFS Foods Liquor Mart can now be found. When Fairmont Glass and Paint went out of business, Gene opened S&M Glass down the street on the corner of Merchant Street and Morgantown Avenue.

The business has been located at that same spot since its inception.

Gene’s sons, Bob Martin and Bill Martin, both earned college degrees and then decided they wanted to be part of the family business. They began working with their father when he established the store, and joined him as owners in the early ’90s.

Gene passed away in December of 2004. Today, Bob and Bill own S&M Glass with their mother, Evelyn Martin, who remains involved in some aspects of the business. The Martin family lives in Fairmont.

Bob said the store has basically stayed the same over the years.

S&M Glass’ wide variety of services include “pretty much anything that deals with glass,” he said.

The shop does commercial storefront glazing for buildings and a lot of picture framing. The business, which has 10 employees, sells framed mirrors and antiques. It also cuts table top glass and screens and repairs storm windows.

People have continued to visit S&M Glass for 25 years because of the service it provides, Bob said.

He said he enjoys the variety that comes with having his own business.

“It’s something different every day,” Bob said.
