The new Custard Stand in Mannington is for “people of all ages.”
The business had a soft opening on May 20 and will celebrate its grand opening this Saturday. It is located on the right side of the Rainbow Plaza in a stand-alone building across the parking lot from Shop ’n Save.
This the sixth Custard Stand location. The restaurant franchise originated in Webster Springs and also has stores in Flatwoods, Oak Hill, Danville and Elkins.
Todd Fancher, owner of the Mannington location, said the business’ main item is its hot dogs, which feature the Custard Stand chili that is sold at Walmart, Sam’s Club, Shop ’n Save and other stores. It’s known as “America’s Tastiest Hot Dog Chili.”
Custard Stand also offers a variety of burgers, BLTs, steak or chicken hoagies, club sandwiches, chicken tender or shrimp dinners, and more. As far as sides, customers can find everything from fries and onion rings to cheddar or cream cheese poppers, breaded mushrooms and cheese sticks.
In terms of desserts, the restaurant has more than 25 flavors of ice cream. People can get banana splits, sundaes, milkshakes and arctic swirls, which are filled with toppings like M&M’s, Reese’s peanut butter cups and cookie dough.
Both kids and adults love the diversity of the menu, Fancher said.
This is Fancher’s first business venture. He previously managed Bob Evans for 21 years and was then the manager of Colasessano’s in Morgantown.
“I’d always wanted to own a restaurant,” said Fancher, who lives in Rachel.
With his experience in the restaurant industry, Fancher wanted to establish something that was his own. He looked at a couple different franchise opportunities, and learned about Custard Stand when his dad read about it in a magazine.
After researching the company and contacting the main owners, Fancher felt that Custard Stand would be a success in the Mannington area. The building that he is leasing, which formerly housed Movie Gallery, went through about two months of renovations.
Fancher said the remodeling included removing everything from inside and stripping the space down to bare floors and walls. A wall was constructed for the stock room, a counter was built to separate the kitchen from the dining area, tile was put down on the floors, and the place was painted and decorated.
About 25 employees, who are mainly part-time, run the restaurant. They focus on “high-quality food, fast, friendly service, and a clean restaurant,” he said.
Custard Stand is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. With practices and games and the long days this time of year, the store been staying pretty busy up until closing time, Fancher said.
“The response from the community is really good,” he said. “Even people are coming from Fairmont, Barrackville, Fairview and a lot of the surrounding towns.”
