FAIRMONT — Thanks to Comfort Living Spray Foam Insulation LLC, customers are “living comfortably” in their homes.

Bill Layman, the manager, and his sons Chris and Jarrod Layman started this family-owned business, which they operate out of their home in Bunner Ridge, in June.

Bill said the company offers open-cell and closed-cell foam, which differ in density.

“It depends on what the customer needs as far as our value of the insulation and just customer preference,” he said.

The Layman family primarily does insulation in new home construction. During home remodeling, if the walls are stripped down, they can spray the studs. They can also spray commercial buildings and metal structures, Bill said.

Spray foam insulation provides many advantages. This product reduces air leakage, keeps dust and pollen out, adds strength to the structure of a building, and reduces capacity requirements for HVAC equipment, according to information from Comfort Living Spray Foam Insulation.

In addition, this type of insulation keeps homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer, which is where the business gets its “Comfort Living” name. This is also a green product.

The company takes pride in that fact that “spray foam is a highly efficient building envelope that enables buildings to be heated and cooled with the least possible consumption of natural resources, reducing the carbon footprint of your home by at least 40 percent.”

Bill and his family moved to Bunner Ridge about four years ago from Montana Mines, where he grew up. He is married to Debbie.

With the condition of the economy, Bill was trying to think of a venture that would allow his sons to go into their own line of work. He said he learned about spray foam insulation while watching HGTV, and felt that this work looked doable. So Bill, Chris and Jarrod decided to give it a try.

“It just takes a knack,” Bill said. “The more you spray, the better you get at it. We’ve done several homes in the area.”

The Internet is helping to get the word out about their services, and they are getting business from all over, he said.

They have traveled as far as Snowshoe, and also did insulation for a steel building in Lake Placid, Md. They generally only like to travel within three hours of the Fairmont area, because they want to make sure the projects they take on are cost-effective, Bill said.

“It’s picking up,” he said of business so far. “We’re staying fairly busy.”

Bill said he is enjoying working with his sons. Bill, Chris and Jarrod all also have other jobs and are operating Comfort Living Spray Foam Insulation part-time right now. But the hope is for Chris and Jarrod to run the family business full-time in the future.

The company’s customer service is what sets it apart, Bill said.

“We try to do exactly what the customer wants, and whenever we leave a job we like to leave it as clean or cleaner than when we got there,” he said.
