FAIRMONT — MLD-Major League Dogs hopes to serve the Friendly City for years to come.

On Aug. 1, the Retton family opened this hot dog shop in Fairmont at 1514 Locust Ave., across from Wendy’s and next door to The Salvation Army.

Ronnie Retton Jr., from Fairmont, runs the small operation with his wife Darla, and their children help out whenever they’re in town. Their daughter Wittlee is a junior communications major at Marshall who plans to go into law, and their son Ronnie III is a sophomore sports marketing major at West Virginia University.

Ronnie Jr. prepares his “Major League sauce” – a medium sauce with flavorful spices – daily using fresh ground meat.

He said he knew that some day he wanted to open a family hot dog stand.

For the last several years, Ronnie had been experimenting with his hot dog sauce and trying different recipes, and his family members were his official taste-testers. After lots of mixing and tweaking, he finally got to the point where he felt he was ready to take his hot dog sauce to the public.

“I’ve had a real good response from the people on it,” Ronnie said.

In addition to the sauce, customers can get mustard, ketchup and onions as hot dogs toppings. MLD-Major League Dogs also offers a variety of drinks and chips, as well as cookies to satisfy the customer’s sweet tooth.

Each item, including the hot dogs, is $1 plus tax. Ronnie plans to keep the prices low as long as he can continue to get the products he needs.
