FAIRMONT —
Prom is a night when one can expresses oneself as an individual, a class and even a school.
It takes may months to plan the perfect prom, especially the one that Fairmont Senior High is producing this spring. With a collaboration of ideas, the junior class decided that the ideal location of the 2008 had to be on the majestic Gateway Clipper.
Johnny Leon, a junior, says, “Our class wanted to do something special. We wanted to have a prom that everyone would remember.”
Since this prom will be very elaborate, many factors come into play, such as the coronation, pictures, dinner and the actual dance. With May right around the corner, FSHS’ junior class adds the finishing touches onto their one-of-a-kind prom.
When figuring out early on if this prom was feasible, junior class sponsors Terri Ash and Jeanina Butcher-Ice decided that fundraising was a must. Since their freshman year, the juniors have sold pretzels, peaches, apples, T-shirts, handmade jewelry and many other things. Both teachers and many parents have been dedicating a lot of their time to producing this prom. Along with the class sponsors, Mike DeVault has been a main component during the planning.
“We have been planning this for about a year and a half now. A lot of time has gone into this prom, and hopefully it will all pay off,” DeVault stated.
Once the sponsors and parents figured out that this prom was possible, they had to figure out how they could do it in a way that would appeal to everyone. Everything had to be just right, from the coronation to the dance. Since the boat cannot come to Fairmont, the prom will be held in Morgantown. The junior class decided that the coronation should be held at the school.
Travis DeVault, a junior, says, “We felt as if it would be more convenient that the coronation was held at our school. This way parents and other family members will not have to travel to Morgantown, and the Gateway Clipper will not be overpacked with people.”
Coronation will begin at 6 p.m., and after it is finished, students will then be picked up by charter buses that will bring them to the dock. Next, dinner will be served from a menu that students voted from.
“I think that having dinner on the boat is very convenient. This way, I can eat with all of my friends,” senior Michelle Watson stated. After the students are finished with the dinner, it will be their time to dance the night away. Chartered buses will then pick them up and return them to the school. This special night will provide students with special memories that will last a lifetime.
Now that students know exactly what is going on, many of then have started looking for that perfect gown and the right tuxedo. Many girls have their hair appointments made and are counting down the days until this big day.
Kara Kliethermes, a junior, says, “My favorite part about prom is getting my hair and nails done.”
In agreement with Kliethermes, Laura Dalton says she enjoys getting ready and trying on gowns.
The Fashion Scene and Ginger’s Designer Apparel in Fairmont offer a wide selection of gowns to choose from. Rebecca Cain, a junior, says that Ginger’s just added a new room and they have a great variety of gowns.
Along with the girls, many boys are getting ready for prom. Josh Redelman, a junior, says that he will be getting his tuxedo somewhere in Fairmont. Jack and Jill and Dry Cleaning World offer tuxedos in a variety of sizes and colors that one could rent for the night.
With the theme of ”Floating on a Dream,” both junior and senior classes will truly be acting out a fairy tale ending to the school year. Being held on May 10, this prom will be highly anticipated within Fairmont Senior High School, especially among the upperclassmen.
Together, the student body, the faculty and the prom committee will make this first-time event one to remember.
