‘Every animal deserves a chance’

No-kill shelter goes ‘that extra mile’ to find good homes

Isis, the shelter cat, sits perched on a wooden fence near the main door and slowly creeps over to greet guests who come to visit the sanctuary.

Animal Friends of North Central West Virginia is located on three acres of a wooded area off Brewer Road in Grafton. This sanctuary serves five counties and is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from noon until 4 p.m.

The shelter is a non-profit organization that receives no local, state or federal funding. Animal Friends receive all types of animals at any given time throughout the year; iguanas, baby possums, stray fish, dogs and cats, rabbits, goats and even a pot bellied pig.

“Every animal deserves a chance,” said Cynthis Lucas, executive and co-founder of Animal Friends.

“(An) urgency is there; no program will go that extra mile,” Lucas said.
