Best of luck, Polar Bears, in chase for state crown

Fairmont Senior High School is now one-quarter the way through to a state championship.
That victory over Parkersburg South last week was an excellent one. The Polar Bears showed strong offense when it was needed in the final quarter and shut the Patriots down — prevailing by a two-touchdown margin, 35-21.

  • Christmas Toy Shop: Making holiday joyful for everyone
The Marion County Christmas Toy Shop is not a substitute for Christmas. But it is an attempt to provide gifts for underprivileged children in Marion County who otherwise might not be receiving any.
That, in a nutshell, is what the Christmas Toy Shop is all about. It’s a venture on behalf of Marion County churches, community leaders and schools to help make Christmas more joyful for everyone.

  • Sen. Byrd hits another record in distinguished political career
Sen. Robert C. Byrd is still setting records.
Most people certainly are aware that Byrd is already the longest serving senator in United States history. But today he reaches yet another milestone in his long and distinguished career. Today he becomes the longest serving member of Congress in history. He surpassed Carl Hayden when one combines his terms in the U. S. Senate as well as in the House of Representatives.

  • Natural gas prices down but situation remains volatile
Consumers always welcome news about price reductions.
With the winter heating season upon us, they’ll get to keep a bit more of their money over the coming months. Dominion Hope and Equitable Gas Co., which serve customers in North Central West Virginia, have both reduced their rates because of lower prices for natural gas.

  • Time to really check that Christmas list?
Are you making a list? Checking it twice?
You might be checking it three times this year ... can’t overlook any bad behavior this year. Times are tight.
And you know it’s bad when Wal-Mart has got it rough.

  • Marketing flights brings major prize of $1 million
The North Central West Virginia Airport is seeking to break the 10,000-passenger total by the end of the year.
Now where have we heard that statement before?
You’re right. Last year the Benedum Airport Authority was seeking the same thing. And for good reason. If the goal is achieved, the Federal Aviation Administration will grant the airport $1 million in federal development funds.

  • Programs that push spending key to unlocking nation’s economy
Recently, the Times West Virginian ran a poll question on its Web site asking readers what they felt could bring this nation out of recession.
Overwhelmingly, those readers said that time was the only thing that would help the economy. Time heals all wounds, it’s true, even financial ones.
But it isn’t just time alone that will heal financial wounds — it is time that allows some programs put in place to work.

  • Veterans Day observance should never be put on hold
In September of 2005 on the first day of school, a high school teacher in Little Rock did something that should not be forgotten. On the first day of school, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom. When the first-period kids entered the room, there were no desks.
“Where are our desks?” asked her students.

  • Impact from tourism only getting better
Every so often, someone sitting in a big-city office with nothing better to do, often media types with an agenda or an ax to grind, will take a shot at West Virginia, bringing up old stereotypes that ultimately reveal their own ignorance.

  • $100M budget deficit not so alarming
While national economic experts predict that this country is coming out of The Great Recession, we all know there will be aftershocks for fiscal years to come.
And while West Virginia has fared better than most states when it comes to budget deficits, administration cutbacks and unemployment, it was bound to happen that the state would see some kind of effect from the worst economic storm the nation has seen in decades.

SECTION POLL
Social Security is fading even faster under the weight of the recession, heading for insolvency years sooner than previously expected, the government warned last week.
• Keep the press warm and print that money.
• The retirement age is going to have to go up and benefits must be trimmed.
• Raise the threshold of earnings to be taxed, which is now the first $106,800 of earned income.
