‘We came to see a rock show!’

By Ashley Grier
For the Times West Virginian

Summer it is a time for fun in the sun, pool-side days and sleeping in, but music fans look forward to the season for a whole different reason — music festivals.

Bamboozle, Warped Tour, Lalapalooza, these are some of the countries biggest music festivals, and fans travel from all over the country to take in their favorite bands. Every summer these music festivals gather some of the biggest and best names in music and form their lineups, and fans line up for a chance to see the show! In SPIN magazine in 2006, it was mentioned that on average, thousands of people attend each stop that Bamboozle makes.

Warped Tour, which has been being held since 1996, is looked at by fans as a chance to come together and hear the music they love while taking in some skate boarding and mosh pit action.

Robbie Netz of East Fairmont plans to attend Warped Tour this year.

“I am so excited. It is going to be great. What is better than a concert with tons of your favorite bands? I have wanted to go for so long and this will be my first time going, and I couldn’t be more excited,” he said.

Concerts and music festivals are on a lot of teen’s summer plan lists. Rickie Huffman of Mannington had this to say of a Hush Sound concert she attended on July 7.

“I loved the energy. At live shows, bands can switch it up, and that is something that you can not get from just listening to their music on your MP3 player. The excitement of the fans is also a big part of it. The way the fans react has an impact on the way the bands play. The Hush Sound was great. They sounded great and put on a good show. Everything about a live show is my favorite, but the best thing is the atmosphere!”

Music festivals are often such a high priority on a teen’s list of things to do over the summer that they will travel long distances to get to the show. Road trip would be the way to describe the long journey to most concerts. The complications of traffic aside, most music fans like the road trip it takes to get to their destination.

Netz says he is looking forward to the trip to Warped Tour. Here is what he had to say about the long trip to Pittsburgh: “I do not mind the car ride down. It will be like a road trip. I can’t wait to drive down with some of my best friends. The trip is one of the best parts.”

Whether fans decide to drive cross country to take in a show of they opt for something more local, it is certain that a lot of music fans will be hitting up shows to see their favorite musical acts.

Let’s just hope it is a safe and rockin’ experience!
