FSU visits State for season finale

Three months ago, Fairmont State head football coach Mike Lopez hoped his Falcons would be playing today for the West Virginia Conference title.Instead the Falcons, like they have each of the past seven years, will be playing for little more than pride Saturday in their season finale as they trek south to Institute to tangle with West Virginia State in a 1 p.m. game at Lakin Field on the Yellow Jackets’ “Senior Day.”

Lady Falcons picked third in WVC poll

Despite the loss of four of their top five leading scorers from last season Fairmont State’s Lady Falcons were selected to finish third this year in the 16-team West Virginia Conference. The league announced its annual preseason coaches’ poll Wednesday. The 2008-09 runner-up West Liberty University is the preseason favorite to claim the title this season led by junior backcourt mates Tori Hansen and Laura Malernee.

FSU men picked sixth in WVC poll

Replacing a second-team All-America selection and the nation’s second-leading scorer will certainly be a tall order this winter for Fairmont State’s men’s basketball team. However, the loss of Thad McFadden, who led FSU in scoring (25.4), 3-point field goals (106), assists (3.9) and steals (2.0) and was second on the team in rebounding (5.4) last season, will be lessened some by the fact that the Falcons return eight players, many of whom got a wealth of quality minutes last year on the floor as the Falcons finished 20-9 overall and 12-8 in the West Virginia Conference.

When Jason Woodman graduated from North Marion High School in the spring of 1997 and headed off to play college baseball at Alderson-Broaddus the idea of someday becoming a college football coach as his profession was probably one of the furthest things from his mind.

Ball control crucial for FSU against Seton Hill

When the West Virginia Conference released the 2009 football schedule neither Fairmont State nor Seton Hill anticipated that in their Oct. 24 meeting at Offutt Field in Greensburg, Pa. the two teams would have a combined three wins between them. But such is the case today when 2-6 FSU pays a visit to the 1-7 Griffins for a 3 p.m. league game.

Seton Hill struggling after magical 2008 season

Good thing second-year Seton Hill University head football coach Joel Dolinski has a great sense of humor.Because he’s certainly needed it this fall. After guiding the Griffins to a 10-3 overall record, a second-place finish in the West Virginia Conference and the school’s first-ever NCAA Division II playoff appearance and victory in its brief history in the sport last fall, 2009 has been – to put it bluntly – a nightmare for Dolinski and 1-7 Seton Hill.
