FSU softball splits with Notre Dame

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State rallied in game two to earn the split in its MEC doubleheader against Notre Dame College on Saturday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.

After five scoreless innings in game two, NDC took a 2-0 lead after a home run by Kelsey Coleman. In the bottom half of the inning, Ericka Aversa hit a sacrifice fly to score Joni Tyree from third. During the next at-bat, Amanda Skidmore hit a stand-up triple to give the Falcons a 3-2 advantage. Later in the inning, Carly Mundie wrapped up the scoring with a sac-fly to bring Dalaney Cortazzo across home plate.

NDC scored a run in the seven when a batter was walked with the bases loaded, but FSU held on for the 4-3 victory.

Ashley Knight picked up the victory in relief of Nikki Nuzum in game two. Ashley Hall had a no-hitter through five innings before taking the loss following a four-run sixth inning for Fairmont State.

Notre Dame jumped out to a 9-0 lead in game one after scoring seven runs in the top of the third. Nicole Spuhler and Jessica Cavaliero each homered for NDC during that stretch.

In the fifth, Madison Bowman and Sarah Parsons each hit RBI singles to extend the game past the fifth inning. In the sixth, Fairmont State scored two unearned runs on an error by the shortstop and Terri Lynn Wolfe homered to make the score 10-5. In the seventh, Aversa homered to left center but the early lead proved to be the difference for NDC in the 10-6 victory.

Mackenzie Wallace pitched a complete game for Notre Dame to improve to 4-7 on the season. Nuzum suffered the loss for the FSU, just her second of the season.

Fairmont State will host Urbana on Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. at Duvall-Rosier Field.
