FSU’s Woodman adds three to staff

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State University head football coach Jason Woodman has announced the addition of three coaches to his staff in Mike Compton (offensive line), Dan Gayton (wide receivers) and Chris Harvey (defensive line/special teams).

“We are excited to add these three men to the staff because they bring obvious coaching strengths and a wide variety of experiences ranging from the NFL to all levels of college football,” Woodman said. “They are excited to be at Fairmont State and very hungry to help us win championships here.”

Compton comes to Fairmont State after spending the last two seasons as the offensive line coach and director of operations at Bluefield (Va.) College. Prior to that he was the head football coach at Patrick Henry High in Glade Spring, Va., for three seasons.

Compton was a four-year letter-winner and a consensus All-America center at West Virginia University. He was selected in the third round of the NFL draft by the Detroit Lions and spent 12 seasons in the league. He won two Super Bowls as a member of the New England Patriots.

“Mike was obviously an unbelievable player to be an All-American and spend 12 years in the NFL and win Super Bowls,” Woodman said. “We are excited to have him bring that kind of experience and knowledge here, but he’s also a hard worker who is very meticulous and cares about doing the best job he can as a coach. We are thrilled to have him on staff.”

Gayton comes to Fairmont State from Florida State, where he spent five years as both a student and graduate assistant coach under Jimbo Fisher. He was involved in assisting Fisher and offensive coordinator James Coley on a daily basis while also being responsible for opponent scouting, self-scouting and overall evaluation of the offense. Gayton also helped organize campus visits, football camps and Florida State’s 7-on-7 Tournament. During his time with the Seminoles, Florida State went 47-20 and won its bowl game in each of those five seasons, including the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day.

“Dan is a young coach who has come up through the ranks much the way I did,” Woodman said. “He knows this offense immediately from his experience at Florida State, and he brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to our staff.”

Harvey, a Logan County native, joins Woodman’s staff with a strong mix of Division I and II experience as a player and coach. Harvey was a four-year letterman at the University of Miami and was the starting long snapper on the Hurricanes’ national championship winning team in 2002.

He went on to coach three seasons at Glenville State as the defensive line and special teams coordinator where he had four players earn All-WVIAC honors. He then spent four seasons at Florida State as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, special teams quality control coach and defensive line coach. He spent one season at North Alabama as the offensive line coach helping the Lions to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs and coached two All-Gulf South Conference selections.

“I think Chris’ experience at a variety of levels, as well as his ties to the state of West Virginia, are a huge plus for our coaching staff,” Woodman said. “Chris brings a lot to the table with his familiarity of the area and the teams in our league. He’s got a great personality and has succeeded at the highest level as a player and a coach.”
