Lopez out as FSU football coach

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State University’s first football game in the newly established Mountain East Conference will come under the guidance of a new head coach.

The university announced Monday afternoon that sixth-year coach Mike Lopez had been released from his contract.

The apparent mutual parting of ways comes exactly one month after the Falcons lost 49-23 to West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Shepherd University and finished the season 4-6 to give Lopez his fourth losing season at the school in six years.

“I want to thank my assistant coaches, staff, the players and their families for their dedication and loyalty,” Lopez said in a prepared statement released by the school. “I’m extremely proud of the young men on this team. Their positive character both on and off of the field reflects on their hard work as individuals and as a team. I believe we made some positive strides, most notably in our academics, that were helping to build a foundation for this program.”
