Falcons set to visit Charleston

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State’s basketball teams look to keep win streaks intact when they travel to the University of Charleston today for a doubleheader at the Eddie King Gym, with the women’s game will tip at 4 p.m. and men’s game to follow at 6 p.m.

The men’s game features two squads predicted to do big things in 2012-13, as UC was picked second in the league’s preseason poll and the Falcons one spot behind in third.

FSU (4-2, 2-1 in WVIAC), which has not played since a 82-72 victory over Bluefield State two weeks ago, is riding a two-game win streak.

Five players are averaging in double figures for FSU this season, led by Cooper's 21.3 points and nine rebounds per game. Hill has led the Falcons in scoring in the last two outings and is averaging 14.5 points and 8.3 rebounds. Malik Stith (14.3), Isaac Thornton (13.6) and Stevie Browning (10.7) are also averaging double-figure scoring this season.

The Golden Eagles — who took second in the conference last season and earned a bid to the NCAA tournament — are 5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference. UC has won three straight games and is coming off an 88-65 victory over Glenville State.

Terrell Lipkins leads UC with 20.2 points, six rebounds and five assists. Xavier Humphrey averages 14.2 points, a team-high 6.8 rebounds and is one of six Charleston players averaging double figures in points.

The FSU women (5-2, 3-0) have won three in a row, the latest a hard-fought 57-51 home victory over Virginia-Wise.

Senior guard Kaitlin Snyder leads the Falcons in scoring at 16.7 points per game and has a team-high 30 assists. Hailey Garrett is averaging 14.1 points and 8.7 boards and has posted three straight double-doubles. Tiffany Nicholson, meanwhile. has scored in double figures in three of the last four games, adds 10 points and has a team-high 24 steals.

Charleston (4-3, 1-2) lost at Glenville State, 84-87, on Monday.

The Golden Eagles have three players scoring in double-figures this season, led by LeAnne Ross with 14.7 points.
