FSU football camp benefits area youth

FAIRMONT — Under cloudy skies and a few rain drops, area youth shined bright in place of the sun Friday at Duvall-Rosier Field for Fairmont State’s Future Falcon Camp.

Despite a passing rain shower, FSU coach Jason Woodman said the energy was high.

“We stayed out there for a while,” the coach said. “The parents were actually encouraging them to stay out there, and we had fun.”

Around 50 campers ages 8-12 attended the camp, learning basic techniques that Woodman and his staff would go over with their athletes during the first few days of summer camp, which begins in August.

For the campers who have high hopes of remaining athletes, the experience should be beneficial for their growth.

“A lot of times the game of football comes down to the basic fundamentals — who blocks, tackles or runs the best,” Woodman said of what he taught the campers.

The future Marion County stars were also able to interact with some Falcon players — veterans as well as some incoming freshmen — which was beneficial to everyone involved.

The young campers were even able to participate in a question-and-answer segment with the Fairmont State players.

But the biggest benefit came in the fact that area youth were able to participate in a camp close to home and get enjoyment out of it.

“It was good to get some of the young kids involved. It was the first time we were able to do it,” Woodman noted. “We had a good turnout and hope to build on it for next year. Everyone involved had a good time. We were excited to teach the young guys and already looking forward to it for next year.”
