FSU’s Davis named first-team All-MEC

Three others earn league honors

BRIDGEPORT — Four Fairmont State football players earned All-MEC honors as announced by the league office Tuesday.

Garrett Davis earned first team honors, while Chris Barfield and Jacob Jean-Charles garnered second team accolades. Running back Dawrence Roberts rounded out the FSU honorees by receiving honorable mention.

Davis, a senior from Havana, Fla., led the team with 104 tackles (79 solo), 16 TFL, four sacks and two fumble recoveries as a senior. The linebacker also broke up two passes and blocked a kick this season. Davis finished fourth in the MEC, averaging 10.4 tackles per game as a senior. Davis ended his FSU career in third place in total tackles (356) and first in solo tackles (246).

Barfield, a junior from Cary, N.C., anchored the FSU offensive line that helped the rushing attack average 122.3 yards per game and gave up just 25 sacks this season. Barfield was also named Preseason All-American by USA Football, earning honorable mention honors.

Jean-Charles, a freshman from Miami, Fla., led the FSU secondary with 39 tackles, seven pass break-ups, an interception and fumble recovery this season. Jean-Charles started each of the 10 games for the Falcons at left cornerback, usually guarding the opponents’ top wide receiver. Jean-Charles returned his interception against Shepherd 38 yards for an FSU touchdown.

Roberts, a senior transfer from Grambling, led the FSU rushing attack with 151 carries for 668 yards and four touchdowns this season. Roberts averaged 66.8 yards per game and 4.4 yards per carry for the Falcons. The senior earned MEC offensive player of the week honors after rushing for 175 yards against West Virginia State.

Quarterback D.J. Mendenhall of Urbana was named Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Year, defensive lineman Robert Hayes of Shepherd the Defensive Player of the Year and Shepherd head coach Monte Cater the Coach of the Year. In addition, running back Jabre Lolley of Shepherd has been named the Mountain East Conference Offensive Freshman of the Year, and Shepherd linebacker Octavius Thomas the Defensive Freshman of the Year.
