FSU advances to MEC final with resounding win over Charleston

WHEELING — Fairmont State University’s volleyball team advanced to the final of the Mountain East Conference Tournament after defeating Charleston, 3-1, in the first semifinal on Friday evening at the McDonough Center.

The Falcons found themselves down 1-0 after the opening set when the Golden Eagles picked up the 25-20 victory. FSU started quickly in the second and third sets, winning both by the score of 25-18 to gain a 2-1 advantage.

Early in the fourth set it was all UC as the Golden Eagles took a 9-3 advantage to force a Fairmont State timeout. FSU responded after the timeout and took the next four points, three of which were kills by Bri Swann.

UC still held an 18-15 advantage later in the set but from that point FSU scored 15 of the final 18 points of the set to pick up the 25-21 victory in the fourth set.

Fairmont State had 64 kills and a .235 attacking percentage compared to just 32 kills and a .125 attack percentage for UC. The Golden Eagles had a 13-5 advantage in blocks.

Swann led the way for the Falcons with 27 kills and 13 digs in the victory. Kaitlyn Witsaman and Amber Wilson also reached double-digit kills with 14 and 13 respectively. Tabbie Bias had a match-high 54 assists, and Tiff Smathers tallied 18 digs for the Falcons. Erin Harwood also chipped in 11 digs defensively.

Katharine Furlong led UC with eight kills in the loss. Breanna Barker had 15 assists, and Elle Martin had a team-high 17 digs for the Golden Eagles. Victoria Severo had a match-high seven blocks for UC.
