FSU hoop teams host Bluefield today

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State’s basketball teams look to keep the positive momemtum rolling when they host Bluefield State today in a men’s-women’s doubleheader at Joe Retton Arena.

The Lady Falcons (3-2 overall, 2-0 in the WVIAC), which begin play at 2 p.m., are riding a two-game win streak after holding on for a 69-66 road win at Pitt-Johnstown on Thursday.

On the men’s side, FSU (3-2, 1-1 WVIAC) bounced back with a 85-81 win on the road at Pitt-Johnstown earlier in the week.

Today, they’ll be facing a Blues squad that hasn’t experienced the taste of victory in a long, long time. Bluefield State, at 0-4 and 0-2 in league play, has dropped its last 29 games dating back to last season.

Vincent Rogers is the team’s top scorer averaging 14.0 points per game, while Gary Martin averages 7.5 rebounds. Bluefield State is shooting a league-low 35 percent from the field, while opponents are shooting 52 percent from the field; FSU is hitting 49 percent of its shots.

FSU guard Chase Morgan, who came off the bench to score 21 and key the win in Johnstown, played last season at Bluefield State and was the team’s top scorer.

This year, he’s one of six Falcon players scoring in double figures. Brendan Cooper leads FSU with 24.0 points in three games played. He was held to 10 points against UPJ. Isaiah Hill is averaging 13.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game for FSU, and is coming off a breakout game on Tuesday in which he scored a season-best 26 points.

In the women’s game, FSU hopes to keep a recent run of success over the Lady Blues going.

Fairmont State has won 15 straight games against Bluefield State and hasn’t lost a game in the series since the 2000-01 season. BSC has not won in Fairmont since the 1996-97 season.

Kaitlin Snyder leads FSU with 16.8 points and 5.0 assists per game. She is averaging 22 points in Fairmont State’s three wins, but is averaging only 11 points in FSU’s two losses.

In addition, Hailey Garrett is averaging 13.2 points and a team-high 7.4 rebounds. Of that average, 19 of those rebounds have come on offensive. Fellow FSU and North Marion High teammate Tiffany Nicholson leads the WVIAC with 3.4 steals per game so far this season.

• Kendra Holmes averages 7.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game off the bench for the Lady Falcons.

Charity Harris leads five Bluefield (1-1, 1-1) players in double figures with 22 points per contest. Tasia Nolan averages a double-double at 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Tiffany Moore has chipped in 11 points and 7.5 rebounds.
