Falcons, State to clash for softball title

VIENNA — Fairmont State University and West Virginia State softball teams will clash today for the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship.

Chelsea Cobb hurled a two-hit shutout for regular-season champion Fairmont State (36-11), enabling the Falcons to advance to the title game with a 4-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday.

With one out in the second, Carly Mundie doubled to center field. Paige Erickson came in as a pinch runner and moved to third on a wild pitch. Amanda Skidmore’s double gave FSU a 1-0 advantage.

The Falcons struck again in the third when Holly Frampton’s single scored Sarah Parsons, who had reached on a walk.

FSU added its third run of the game in the fifth when Parsons knocked in Brittany Williams, who had singled with one out. Mundie singled in the sixth and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. She crossed home plate on a hit by Terri Lynn Wolfe for the final tally.

The Bobcats did not have a hit after the fourth inning.

In an earlier game Friday, West Virginia State jumped out to a 4-0 inning over the Falcons after the top of the first and led 5-1 heading into the fourth. The Yellow Jackets produced seven runs in the fourth en route to a 15-5 victory.

With two outs and Dee Dee Loftis on first, Desiree Giffin singled, putting runners at first and second. Mattie Best’s single put WVSU runners at every base. Alana Weyant then blasted a grand slam for a quick 4-0 advantage.

The Falcons got a run back quickly as Courtney Iacobacci led off the bottom of the first with a homer. WVSU pushed its lead to 5-1 in the third when Best doubled home Sabrina Schouten.
