Falcons fall short in tourney championship

VIENNA — West Virginia State defeated Fairmont State, 3-1, in game two of the WVIAC Tournament Finals to clinch the WVIAC Tournament Championship. FSU picked up a 4-1 victory early in the day to force a second game.

The Falcons are now 37-12 on the season and will have to wait for the NCAA Selection Committee to select the regional at-large bids. WV State will receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.

In the first game of the afternoon, Carly Mundie scored a pair of RBI on a single to left field to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. WV State cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth after a single by Sabrina Schouten scored Sydney Kaplan. Sissy Stubbs hit an RBI single to center field in the sixth inning to stretch the FSU lead to 3-1. Terri Lynn wrapped up the scoring in game one with a sacrifice fly later in the inning to score Kayla Leach from third. Chelsea Cobb got the final three outs in the top seventh to wrap up the 4-1 victory for the Falcons and force a second game to decide the WVIAC Championship.

In game two, WV State got on the board first after a walk with the bases loaded scored a run for the Yellow Jackets. Courtney Iacobacci hit an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1. Kaplan hit a double to center field in the fourth to regain the lead for WV State with the RBI. Dee Dee Loftis scored an RBI in the fifth to stretch the Yellow Jacket lead to 3-1. FSU was held scoreless in the final three innings and WVSU held on for the 3-1 victory.

Anna Eggleston picked up the victory for the Yellow Jackets after allowing just five hits. Cobb pitched to complete games for the Falcons. Cobb struck out 11 batters on the afternoon.

Holly Frampton, Cobb and Iacobacci were named to the WVIAC All-Tournament Team for their performances in the three-day tournament.
