Fairmont State looking for redemption over UVa-Wise

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State (17-8) is looking to get some revenge when it travels to take on UVa-Wise (9-14) today.

When the men tip off at 3 p.m., the Falcons will be hoping to avenge an 82-77 loss which they endured back on Jan. 13, on their home court.

The difference in this game is that the Falcons will be able to turn to Brendan Cooper, who was hurt in the last matchup. The senior swingman will undoubtedly be tasked with stopping one of the top players in the conference in Wise forward Deon Boyce.

In FSU’s previous matchup with the Cavaliers, Boyce recorded a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds and was one of four Cavaliers in double figures.

Boyce is averaging a double-double of 17.0 points and 14.5 rebounds per contest this season. He’s grabbed 10 rebounds in every game this season except for one and has a season-high of 21 earlier this year.

The Falcons will turn to its scorers, Stevie Browning, Thomas Wimbush and Cooper, to neutralize the duo of Boyce and sharpshooter Matt Day.

Wimbush scored just nine points in the last meeting but has since scored in double figures in every contest minus two of them and will look to be a force for the Falcons.

Coupled with Browning and Cooper’s ability to get to the rim, Wimbush should get numerous looks and open up the floor for FSU.

Since losing to Wise last time, the Falcons are 12-4.

On the women’s side, Fairmont State (14-8) will tip off with UVa-Wise  (9-14) at 1 p.m.

The Lady Falcons have been on a tear lately, winning five of their last seven contests.

Last time these two teams squared off, FSU came away with a 77-52 victory. The Lady Falcons have lost just three times since the last meeting.

FSU boasts four starters who are in double figures with Makenzie White leading the way. The sophomore is averaging 16.0 points, 5.2 assists and 4.9 rebounds.

For Wise, Makenzie Cluesman is averaging 11.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per outing.
