Falcons lose nail-biter, 77-75

FAIRMONT — It was shaping up to be an upset that would have struck well-known Division I program Kent State University.

The culprit?

The Fairmont State Fighting Falcons.

On Sunday evening, Fairmont State’s men’s basketball team clawed its way back against the Golden Flashes at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center in Kent, Ohio; however, they lost, 77-75.

The Falcons were down by 17 points with nearly 10 minutes remaining in the game, but when 9:21 struck, FSU turned on the switch.

“In the second half, I thought that we were very flat to come out,” Fairmont State head coach Jerrod Calhoun said. “We missed a lot of easy shots ... we ran a lot of good plays, but missed the easy baskets. That’s when we got down by 17 and then we started pressing them a little bit and turned them over. I think we just had a better sense of urgency.”

FSU received help from its freshman sensation in Stevie Browning — he drilled back-to-back threes, narrowing the deficit from 66-49 to 68-55 with the snap of a few fingers.

That’s when the comeback was on.

Isaiah Hill then triggered a three of his own and    Isaac Thornton stepped back and knocked down a three.

“Our four core guys are our three seniors — Isaac Thornton, Isaiah Hill and Malik Stith — plus Brendan Copper, who is a junior. All those guys are really, really good, so it allows our fifth starter to roam around and get shots,” Calhoun said. “Malik (Stith) does such a terrific job of making the extra pass. Stevie’s going to get a lot of open shots because we have a lot of guys who can score in double figures.”
