FSU Alumni Association welcomes Woodman

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State football fans will have to wait another week to see their Falcons in action. But Thursday night, they got a sneak-peak of the man leading the team.

The Erickson Alumni Center overflowed with Falcons supporters when the Fairmont State Alumni Association sponsored a welcome reception for first-year coach Jason Woodman.

“It’s exciting just to see that people are excited about what we are doing,” Woodman said.

After about a half hour of mingling with fans, Woodman introduced his coaching staff and discussed some of his goals for this season. While he stopped short of guaranteeing a championship, or even the playoffs, he did say that the team would work to improve every day.

Woodman, a Marion County native, also said he wants the team to embody some of the working-class mentality he sees in the community.

“The people from this area are blue-collar, hard-working people. That’s how I was raised, and that’s what I want our team to develop into,” he said. “I’m not a flashy kind of guy. I just expect things to be done right. I think we’re getting there.”

Mike Arcure is an FSU alumnus and was an assistant basketball coach for about 10 years in the 1960s and ’70s. He said he attends almost all of the Fairmont State functions, but this one was a little extra special.
