FSU men face first WVIAC challenge

Falcons look to rebound from tough loss

FAIRMONT — Lack of defense and lack of toughness equals losses.

The Fairmont State men’s basketball team found that out on Friday at Joe Retton Arena when it was manhandled by WVU Tech, 87-83.

FSU’s defense at times seemed flustered, and on the offensive side of the ball, they couldn’t close out.

“We can’t guard the basketball — when you can’t guard the basketball, you will have trouble,” said Fairmont State head coach Jerrod Calhoun. “They had all guards, so we tried to pound the things inside. We couldn’t make layups. On defense, they spread us and beat us off the bounce and (David Rawlinson) made plays and (Brandon Burgraff) three pointers — that’s the end of the story. You have to sit on the guard and if you don’t, you can’t beat anybody.”

Rawlinson managed to drill 9 of 15 shots, score 25 points add six rebounds. Burgraff tallied a 50 percent 3-point average, raining threes from all over the court. He finished the game 5 of 10 from downtown and 8 of 17 total for 23 points.

The Golden Bears improved to 7-2 on the season as FSU dropped its first loss of the season. The Falcons stand at 2-1, but Calhoun said he is not pleased with the team’s performances yet this season.

oooooo

With FSU down 26-18 in the first half Friday, it was time for the Malik Stith show.

Stith was weaving through Tech’s defense as if they were standing in mud. It was like he was moving in fast forward and everybody else was standing still — even his own teammates.
