Lady Falcons looking to rebound at home

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont State women’s basketball team is back at home — with the hopes of bouncing back.

The Lady Falcons, who saw their two-game winning streak snapped in a 72-62 league loss to West Liberty on Saturday, host non-conference Washington Adventist University at 6 p.m. today at the Joe Retton Arena.

With three games left before the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament begins, FSU (16-9) is looking for a little late-season momentum. It is something that has eluded the team so far, as the Lady Falcons are 5-5 in their past 10 games and haven’t won three in a row since a six-game run to start the new calendar year.

In FSU’s last time out, Meghan Wiseman scored 26 points to lead West Liberty to a 10-point road win. The Lady Falcons had three double-figure scorers in Kaitlin Snyder (17 points), Emily Lohr (16) Briana Welch (12). However, star forward Hailey Garrett battled foul trouble for most of Saturday’s game and played 28 minutes. FSU shot 38 percent from the floor (22 of 58) and on the other end allowed the Hilltoppers to hit half their shots (26 of 52). In all, the Falcons are shooting 40.3 percent on field goals as a team this season, good for seventh in the WVIAC.

Washington Adventist, a Division 2 independent based in Maryland, is 5-18 overall. The Lady Shock are coming off a 63-60 loss at Southern Virginia last Thursday and have won three of their past four. They began the season 1-13 after going through November and December winless.

Senior guard Vanessa Rice is the team’s top scorer at 14.1 points per game. Guard Briana McClain (10.9) and guard/forward Jerria Brown-McDaniel (10.8) also average double figures.

After today’s game, the Falcons visit Seton Hill (Pa.) on Thursday and then return home to close the regular season on Saturday against Ohio Valley.
