FSU looking for first win

Winless Falcons hit road to play 2-0 Bowie State

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State’s football team takes its early-season road show out of state today when it visits Bowie State (Md.) at 1 p.m.

The contest, the final of a three-game road swing to start 2012, is the third meeting ever between the schools.

The Falcons (0-2) are fresh off a 41-21 loss at Glenville State last Thursday, while Bowie State moved to 2-0 last week with 28-14 victory over Benedict College.

Here’s a brief look at today’s matchup:

This season: FSU 0-2; Bowie State 2-0.

Coaches: FSU — Mike Lopez (fifth season); Bowie State — Damon Wilson (fourth season).

Key players: FSU — Bobby Vega, QB; Chris St. Hilaire, WR; Trevor Malnick, LB; Daniel Monroe, RB. Bowie State — Rahmann Lee, RB; Darold Hughes, QB; Orlandus Harris, WR.

FSU notes: After solid defense at Clarion, FSU’s defense was torched at Glenville last week. In the first half alone, the Pioneers scored 34 points and in all piled up more than 500 yards of offense. ... The Pioneers had seven plays of 20 yards or more, including four for touchdowns. ... A bright spot was the play of true freshman linebacker Trevor Malnick. A former Fairmont Senior High star, Malnick had nine tackles, two for loss, filling in at the sam LB position versus Glenville. ... Matt Wilmer’s 100-yard kick return for a touchdown was the first of his career. It was technically a 102-yard kick return, but NCAA statistical guidelines mandate the maximum yardage on any play is 100 yards. Jerome Hoes had a 101-yard kickoff return for FSU in 1978, but the NAIA guidelines allowed for plays to be longer than 100 yards at that time. ... It was the first kickoff return for a touchdown for the program since Zack Page pulled the feat in 2009. ... Freshman Shad Alexander led FSU in rushing last week with 10 carries for 53 yards. Daniel Monroe was held under 100 yards for a second straight game. ... Junior QB Bobby Vega’s two TD passes were his first at FSU.

Bowie State notes: Bowie State is stout defensively. The Bulldogs are ranked top 15 in the country in both total defense (12th) and pass defense (15th). The Bulldogs are allowing just 222 yards per game and only 125.5 through the air this season. ... Despite those strong numbers, they have just three sacks and have forced one turnover this season. ... Bowie State’s rushing attack is led by Keith Brown (21 carries, 156 yards, three touchdowns). Corwin Acker has added 124 yards and a score. ... Quarterback Jared Johnston (16-for-33, 274 yards, 3 TD in Week 1) was injured early last week and was replaced by Tyrae Reid. Reid went 11-for-20 with 110 yards. ...  Wilson is 18-15 with the Bulldogs. ... Pittsburgh Steelers running back Isaac Redman played for Bowie State from 2004-08 and rushed for a team career record of 3,330 yards and 35 TDs.

Series notes: FSU leads the all-time series, 2-0. Last year, Monroe had 144 yards rushing and two scores in a 49-20 win in Fairmont. FSU had a 28-0 scoring edge after halftime to take commend.
