White will give FSU women boost

FAIRMONT — West Virginia University’s loss is Fairmont State’s gain.

And a huge gain at that, as Makenzie White’s transfer to Marion County was made official by FSU head women’s basketball coach Steve McDonald on Wednesday.

White, the state’s high school player of the year in 2012, will enroll at Fairmont State for the spring semester and will have three years of eligibility left.

“We are very excited that Makenzie has chosen to attend Fairmont State,” McDonald said in statement released by the school. “She will be an impact player in practice in the spring and on the court for us next fall. She is obviously a very talented player, but the attributes that we like about her the most are her work ethic and effort every time she steps on the floor.”

While the longtime coach feels she’ll make an impact in practice soon enough, there’s an excellent chance White will do the same once finally suited up in FSU maroon and white.

After all, the 5-9 guard from Madison not too long ago was ranked No. 67 in Blue Star’s national rankings. She was a four-time all-state selection and scored more than 2,000 career points. She was also recruited to WVU by head coach Mike Carey very early in her high school career and continued a recent trend of in-state girls’ hoops stars making the leap to the Division I level.

Once at WVU, though, White didn’t see much action. She played in just five games — spanning 15 minutes — this season before deciding to transfer last month.

That will undoubtedly change at FSU. White will be the main attraction for the Lady Falcons and should help ease the sting of losing reigning WVIAC player of the year Kaitlin Snyder to graduation.
