Juggling act

Flexibility crucial when dealing with Starns’ activities

FAIRMONT — (Editor’s note: This is the next in the weekly Family Times feature stories. Each week, the Times West Virginian features an active family who seems to have the knack for keeping it all together despite hectic schedules and demanding activities and professions. In the Starn home, hectic schedules are dealt with in a unique way.

Rather than having everyone’s schedule planned out, Ami and Brian Starn use their flexible jobs to deal with day-to-day activities.

Ami and Brian have been married for 10 years after being introduced through mutual friends Jason and Jodie Saunders. The family is completed with two children of their own and two children from Ami’s previous marriage: Johnny Manchin, 17, Lauren Manchin, 14, Emily, 8, and Sophie, 4.

Ami works as a real estate agent at Floyd Real Estate in Fairmont while Brian is a firefighter at the Fairmont Fire Department but also is a real estate agent at Floyd.

For nine days Brian works 24-hour shifts at the fire department, meaning he works for 24 hours then has 24 hours off. After nine days he has six days off.

So for the parents, juggling schedules becomes a skill.

“It’s hectic, especially when they’re all in different sports,” Ami said.
