Two individuals were transported to Fairmont General Hospital after two separate accidents at the Federal No. 2 Mine near Fairview Tuesday.
The first accident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. at the mine, which is located in Monongalia County. This accident was minor, according to Amy Louviere, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Department of Mine Safety and Health Administration. Louviere said the miner hit his knee and had a minor cut.
A dispatcher with Marion County Central Communications confirmed that the miner was transported to Fairmont General Hospital. Louviere said that it is company policy to transport miners injured in work-related accidents to the hospital.
The second accident occurred at 11:34 a.m., Carolyn Ledsome, director of Marion County Central Communications, said. This miner was also transported to the hospital after hurting his ankle, she said. Grant Town Emergency Medical Service personnel transported the patient.
“Both miners walked out of the mine,” Louviere said.
The Federal No. 2 Mine is owned by Patriot Mining Co. Inc. Officials with the company did not return repeated calls seeking comment.
