No injuries in mobile home fire

Significant damage reported; dog is rescued

BAXTOR A mobile home along the Paw Paw Creek Road sustained severe damage after a fire broke out in the structure Thursday morning.

No injuries were reported because of the blaze, said Destry Jones, chief of the Baxter Volunteer Fire Department. Jones added that it appears the fire started in the floor of a closet. However, the fire is still under investigation. Jones said the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.

“It’s not suspicious,” Jones said.

Jones said the mobile home was most likely a total loss. A large section of the structure sustained significant fire damage, he said. The fire also caused considerable smoke damage in the home.

No one was home when the blaze began, Jones said. One dog was rescued from the mobile home, he added.

The mobile home where the fire occurred was near the Baxter fire hall. Therefore, Baxter firefighters were first on the scene. The firefighters extinguished the flames about one-half hour after arriving on scene, Jones said. However, firefighters were still checking areas of the mobile home to make sure that all of the hot spots had been extinguished.

Baxter was not the only fire department that responded to the scene. Grant Town also responded as did Rivesville, Barrackville and Fairview. The Marion County Sheriff’s department was also on scene.

The fire occurred at 10:36 a.m., said a dispatcher at Marion County Central Communications. The state fire marshal’s office was called in to investigate.
