(Editor’s note: This is the fourth in a series of features about cancer survivors that will be published throughout the week leading to Friday’s Relay for Life at Fairmont State University).
As Saige Sprouse plays with her family’s pets and shows off her SpongeBob SquarePants toys and many stuffed animals, she’s all smiles and giggles.
It’s difficult to believe that this 6-year-old girl has been through so much in less than two years.
Her mom, Sarah, wears a purple bracelet that reads “Love & Prayers to Saige — Hope Faith Courage Strength.” The teachers at Saige’s school, Big Elm Elementary, organized the bracelet project after Saige was diagnosed with leukemia on Nov. 1, 2007.
Sarah Sprouse said she noticed during the week of Halloween in 2007 that some red spots had appeared on her daughter’s skin and a mark on her leg had turned red and was swollen.
