Oldest in Allegheny system

Staffing to be reduced at Rivesville Power Plant

RIVESVILLE — Rumors abound in this tiny town about whether or not the power station is going to close.

Town leaders have expressed concern about what would happen to tax revenues, and workers are wondering about their future if the plant closes.

The Rivesville Power Plant was built by Monongahela Power and Railway Co. in 1919 and is currently operated by Allegheny Energy.

The Times West Virginian contacted Allegheny Energy to find out if the rumor about the power plant closing is true.

Allen Staggers, Allegheny spokesman, said the plant is not closing, though it is reducing staffing beginning in September/October. He said Rivesville is the oldest coal-fired power station on the Allegheny system, and the plant operated only 10 days last year. It is operated only when demand for electricity is very high or the output is needed for reliability purposes.

“We are making changes to the staffing at Rivesville, which reflect the way the plant is operated,” he said.
