Knowing what to do

McDonald’s employees trained to handle emergencies

By Katie Wilson
Times West Virginian

FAIRMONT McDonald’s employees are getting some new training and they’re lovin’ it.

Management employees at seven stores in North Central West Virginia are spending a few hours receiving some basic first-aid and situation-management skills.

The classes are conducted by Matt Smith and Rosetta Kolar, both EMTBs (Emergency Medical Technician Basics) at the Marion County Rescue Squad. Both are Basic Life Support instructors. They taught a class called Heart Saver/First Aid to the McDonald’s managers. Those managers learned the basics of what to do in a host of situations, from a potential heart attack to a bleeding wound.

“We covered basic first aid, environmental emergencies, bee stings, cardiac arrest, the Heimlich maneuver and how to recognize strokes,” Smith said.

In an emergency situation, first responders, like EMTs, need all the information they can get. If they have that information before they get on scene, the chances they can help the patient are drastically increased.
