$96,000 grant to be used for police cruisers, vests, uniforms, equipment

The city and Marion County just became a little safer courtesy of Uncle Sam.
The city and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department received a $96,000 federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant last week.
Acting City Manager Jay Rogers, who was instrumental in obtaining the grant, said the city’s share of about $67,000 will be used to purchase 42 bullet-proof vests and two police cruisers. The sheriff’s department’s share of nearly $29,000 will be used to buy new uniforms and equipment for three new deputies they hope to hire later this year.
