W.Va. town remembers native son Don Knotts

MORGANTOWN — Known to the world for playing Deputy Barney Fife on “The Andy Griffith Show,” Don Knotts’ memory is preserved in his hometown as one of West Virginia’s favorite sons.

A series of events paying tribute to Knotts are planned for a two-day celebration in Morgantown starting Friday. Knotts died in 2006.

Highlights include his widow, Francey Yarborough, sharing personal stories about the comic actor, and a one-woman show by Knotts’ daughter, Karen.

Knotts grew up in Morgantown and graduated from both Morgantown High School and West Virginia University. He is famous not just for the iconic Fife character, but for turns in sitcoms like “Three’s Company” and films like “The Apple Dumpling Gang.”
