City crews repair waterline break

Jefferson Street closed for further work

FAIRMONT — A significant waterline break that disrupted service to several city water customers and re-routed downtown traffic over the past two days was officially repaired by utility crews Wednesday.

Acting City Manager Jay Rogers said Wednesday evening that workers are still restoring Jefferson Street from Adams Street to Washington Street, which was torn up to repair the broken line, and that it will be closed until further notice.

“We have been asked by the Department of Highways to close Jefferson Street beginning (today) at 7 a.m. from Adams Street to Washington Street until further notice,” he said.”Our hope is that we’re done by the weekend.”

He said the line has been fixed and that a large hole in the area that was drilled to get to the line and fix the problem has been filled with gravel. He said workers have made decent progress on the Adams Street work but are still not finished with Jefferson Street, which is why the closure is necessary.

He said the DOH will post detours directing traffic around the closed-off section of roadway today.

And while the traffic issues have not been pleasant for the traveling public, especially with the nearby connector detour creating unrelated traffic detours on the other side of the High Street Bridge, Rogers said motorists seem to be dealing with the issues without too many problems.
