HealthPlex fire declared an arson

FAIRMONT — The fire at the Fairmont General Hospital HealthPlex that broke out inside the unfinished facility has been declared an arson by West Virginia State Fire Marshal Mackey Ayersman.

The $13 million building, slated to open in October, might have suffered $100,000 in damage, Ayersman said in a statement Saturday.

The fire was discovered at about 3 a.m. Friday.

On Saturday, Fairmont General’s CEO Albert Pilkington III said he would not have an idea of how long the HealthPlex’s opening might be delayed until sometime next week.

The hospital has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of anyone responsible for the fire, and another $2,500 was offered Saturday by the Arson Hot Line, (800) 233-FIRE.

When it does open, the HealthPlex will feature a high-end fitness center, physician offices and diagnostic services, as well as a branch of White Hall Pharmacy that will feature a drive-through.
