City to vote on project bonds

More funding could be available for water-treatment plant

FAIRMONT — City council is poised to approve the second of three readings of an ordinance at tonight’s meeting authorizing the issuance of a series of bonds to cover the cost of the $12.1 million corrective action plan to permanently fix the city’s water-treatment plant.

These bonds will provide the financing needed to undertake the corrective action necessary to improve the city’s water system.

City engineers and consultants developed a corrective plan that enhances water production and resolves pretreatment of water pumped from Tygart River among other steps needed to provide service to more than 13,000 customers.

Based on preliminary estimates, the overall price tag to fix the plant increased from about $10.1 million to nearly $12.1 million.

MEC Construction of Bridgeport was the low bidder for the project and came in at 6 percent over the $8.8 million construction cost of the project to roughly $9.5 million. City Hall is reviewing MEC’s bid and will make a determination to award the project in December.
