Council approves Fairmont levy rates

FAIRMONT — The City of Fairmont approved its levy rates for the fiscal year beginning July 1 at a meeting Tuesday.

Eileen Layman, city finance director, said that the rates were submitted to the state on March 15 and that the state made no modifications to the budget. According to Layman, there is an insignificant change in revenue in comparison to last year’s rates.

The council members who were present at the meeting voted unanimously to approve the rates. Council members Rob Garcia and Bob Gribben were absent from the meeting.

Also at the meeting, City Manager Jay Rogers said that there are still spots available in the Fairmont 101 class which is set to begin Thursday.

The classes will meet the third Thursday of the month, with two sessions to choose from — one from 10 a.m. to noon and another from 6 to 8 p.m. Rogers said there are openings in both the morning and evening sessions.

In addition, scholarships are also available for students who wish to participate in the program.

“If there are interested students out there, we still have sponsorships available for student scholarships,” Rogers said. The purpose of the program is to education the residents of Fairmont about the roles and responsibilities of local government.
