Marion County’s 18th annual Labor Day picnic will take place Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at Hough Park in Mannington.
The event is free and open to the public, and will include free food, door prizes, a 50-50 drawing, and speakers.
Marion County AFL-CIO sponsors the picnic each year, and the Marion County Democratic Party and the United Mine Workers of America are co-sponsors.
Usually, the event sees between 800 and 1,000 people in attendance, and around 1,000 are expected this year.
The event wasn’t always so big, however. When the first Marion County Labor Day picnic took place in 1996, only 150 people were in attendance. But through the continued support of local labor councils and local and international unions, the picnic has grown to become the largest sponsored Labor Day event in the state.
