Managing finances can seem stressful, but financial experts say creating a budget can help relieve that stress.
Criss Cross Inc. in Clarksburg offers Marion County residents consumer credit counseling services free of charge if they donate to the United Way of Marion County.
Amie Darway, executive director at Criss Cross Inc., said stress for a lot of people is caused by finances, and creating a healthy budget helps them relax a little more.
Darway said sitting down with individuals and talking with them about where they spend their money is one of the first steps in creating a good budget.
Darway said when people do their own budgets they tend to forget about a lot of things, and having someone help can benefit the budget.
“If you have somebody triggering you with questions, you start thinking about different things,” she said.
Being realistic is important when it comes to looking at where money is spent. Having a third person look at where someone spends his money makes that person realize how much he actually spends.
“A lot of people spend unconsciously,” Darway said.
Darway used the example of someone buying a $2 cup of coffee every day on her way to work, not realizing how much has been spent on coffee after 12 months.
“It really adds up to a chunk of money,” she said.
Talking about long-term goals like fixing up a house or taking a vacation is something Darway said to keep in mind.
