The recount for the position of Monongah mayor, held Thursday at the town hall, resulted in a tie.
Candidate Bill McCombs and incumbent Don Harris each received 58 votes. McCombs was declared the unofficial winner following the recount, though, when council members decided to solve the tie by drawing names from a hat.
Marion County Clerk Janice Cosco said that because Monongah does not have a city charter, the circumstances called for them to operate under state statute which says that those in supervision of the election, in this case, the four councilmen present, were to draw by lot to decide the winner.
Cosco said she will consult with the Secretary of State’s Office to make sure they used the correct procedure.
