Adding value to food sector can be spark to economy

FAIRMONT — Officials from the Appalachian Regional Commission, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Education and the USDA visited Pierpont Community & Technical College Wednesday as part of the Appalachian Foodways Tour.

The tour focused on exploring the local food sector of the Appalachian economy and included a total of 12 stops throughout the state.

Brian Floyd, dean of the School of Human Services, spoke to the visitors and highlighted the accomplishments and plans of Pierpont’s Culinary Arts Academy and its contribution to the local community.

Dr. Doreen Larson, president of Pierpont, said the institution has had a longstanding commitment to sustainability and promoting small farms in West Virginia.
