United Way awards distributed after record-setting campaign

FAIRMONT — Tuesday was a big day for the Marion County United Way as officers, volunteers and just about everybody connected with the agency in any way celebrated the largest amount ever raised in Fairmont — $457,000.

A luncheon was held at the Fairmont Field Club in honor of the occasion, and there were numerous awards presented to outstanding volunteers throughout Marion County.

Dr. Doreen Larson, president of Pierpont Community & Technical College, and her husband Len were the campaign chairmen. They had many people to congratulate and received some plaudits of their own. It was a joyous occasion for everyone concerned.

“I want to thank everyone who worked so hard,” Len Larson said after his wife had yielded to him for the opening remarks so the United Way could stay within the time constraints it had placed upon itself.

Tina Shaw, past president of the United Way, praised the outstanding volunteers who had worked throughout the 2013 campaign.

“I’ve never seen such volunteerism as was demonstrated this year,” she said.

Several awards were presented.
