A Marion County native is raising awareness of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder through a new organization.
Rick Proctor is the founder and executive director of Vigilant Vet Racing, which was just incorporated on May 1 and is going through the process of becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
The organization wants to get rid of the stigma associated with PTSD and educate people about what it’s like for a veteran with this condition.
PTSD affects about 30 percent of veterans who return home from a combat zone, and that’s just the vets who report it.
Proctor, who runs Vigilant Vet Racing full time, got called into active duty with the West Virginia Army National Guard in 2003, and he went to Iraq in 2004 as a combat medic. He was diagnosed with PTSD shortly after he got back in 2005.
