Mannington Vietnam War memorial nears completion

MANNINGTON — Vietnam veterans will be honored in a new way thanks to an idea that’s been around since 1985 and generous donations.

Mannington Mayor Bob Garcia served 30 years in the Navy and in the Vietnam War. When he retired in 1985 and returned to his home in Mannington, Garcia wanted something built to honor those who served in the Vietnam War.

“I’ve always wanted something for the Vietnam veterans,” he said.

About six months ago, Garcia along with other members of the Vietnam Veterans Association (VVA) in Mannington, decided to start construction on a memorial for Vietnam veterans.

“I brought it up to the guys, and they all said they would like to have something done,” he said.

The memorial is in the process of being constructed, but the main part of the memorial has been built. It sits along the John McCann Memorial Trail near Water Street in Mannington.
