FAIRMONT — A Fairmont residence is “basically a total loss” after a fire inflicted significant damage early afternoon Thursday.

All four city fire stations responded to the call at a Hollen Circle home shortly after 2 p.m.

“When they arrived on scene, the house was already fully engulfed,” said Fairmont Fire Chief Jim Emerick.

Sending a plume of thick grey smoke that was visible from all over the city, the fire quickly spread from the garage to the inside of the home, which was reportedly being prepared for sale.

Neighbors said they heard crackling and thumping noises before the residence. At one point, the garage was completely engulfed by flames.
