City council reviews budget

Proposed general fund has increase of $593,238 over current fiscal year

FAIRMONT — City Manager Jay Rogers presented the fiscal year 2014 proposed budget to Fairmont council members at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

Rogers said the proposed budget would not include any increases in fees or taxes to the city’s residents or businesses.

“It continues to be our goal to provide a budget that gives our departments the resources necessary to ensure their successful operation and functionality so that they may deliver services to the residents and businesses of Fairmont,” Rogers said.

According to Rogers, the proposed budget would include appropriations that would allow for annual debt service obligations to be met while continuing to invest in the city’s infrastructure network.

Rogers said the proposed general fund operating budget for fiscal year 2014 is $13,839,028, an increase of $593,238 over the current fiscal year.

Additionally, Rogers said the proposed budget would not include any provisions in the general operation budget for position reclassification or base pay raises for employees.

However, Rogers said the city could benefit from two new employment positions. One of those positions would be for an in-house IT technician.

“That person would oversee the growing technology component of the city,” Rogers said.

In addition, Rogers said the addition of a parks coordinator would also be in Fairmont’s best interest.
