At a combined work session with the City of Fairmont on Tuesday evening, the Marion County Commission unveiled a plan to redevelop the riverfront property near Palatine Park.
County Commissioner Butch Tennant said the county recently purchased property from CSX Transportation Inc. and sees great potential for economic and recreational development near the riverfront area.
Phase one of the redevelopment plan will include clearing out space for walking trails and adding restrooms, fishing docks, boat docks and boat ramps to the portion of land that extends from the Marion County Election Center to the Palatine Park amphitheater. Because the county owns that portion of the property, Tennant said work on it has already begun and will continue.
